"Parametric" statistical procedures are based on the assumption that randomly selected samples are representative of an underlying population that is distributed in accordance with the bell-shaped or normal curve.
Conversely, the term "nonparametric" is meant to suggest that the distribution of the underlying population that is being sampled is not explicitly defined (Good, 1994).
